Coming from Wakefield I have always had a fascination with chantry/bridge chapels. The Chapel of Our Lady at Rotherham dates from 1483 and is situated on the original bridge over the River Don. Its life as a chantry chapel was short-lived however

Wakefield Market Place , George Arnald, 1817 graphite with watercolour. The cross was demolished in 1865 much against the wishes of the general public. The area in which it was situated running down to what was then All Saints Church (now the cathedral) is still known as Cross
