According to IPCC, transport emissions must drop 59% by 2050 vs 2020.

He added that cutting energy demand in transport gives us “a clear measurable direction towards a net-zero scenario for the sector by 2050.”

Endorsing countries: Chile, Brazil, Colombia, Honduras, Dominican Republic, Spain, Portugal, Norway, Slovenia, Costa Rica, Austria.

As Juan Carlos Muñoz said: “We are committed to making transport a key pillar of climate action, agreeing a shared framework for resilient and low-emissions transport systems.”

The Declaration calls for:
• 25% drop in overall transport energy demand by 2035
• One-third of transport energy coming from sustainable biofuels + renewable sources
• Differentiated pathways that respect national circumstances

With the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026-2035) approaching, and after the first Global Stocktake, we need clear ministerial leadership to avoid fragmented action. Governments, business and civil society are ready — now ministers must set the vision.

SLOCAT will continue to work with partners in the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport to ensure that transport systems worldwide become low-carbon, resilient and people-centred.

Transport must be at the heart of climate action and sustainable development – not left on the sidelines.

Maruxa Cardama continued:

“A global goal for transport must set a clear course to phase out fossil fuels, scale up renewables and reduce overall energy use through a just transition. With a shared destination, we can finally unlock ambition and scale up finance at the speed this decade demands.”

As SLOCAT Secretary General Maruxa Cardama stressed:

“We have an Implementation Plan and we know what needs to be done. What we lack is a shared final direction and destination. At SLOCAT, we believe it is time to agree a global goal for transport.”

In the first panel, speakers from governments, international organisations and civil society discussed how the Decade can:
🔹 Align transport action with the Paris Agreement and the SDGs
🔹 Support countries in delivering just and inclusive transitions
🔹 Minimise trade-offs while maximising co-benefit

The UN Decade of Sustainable Transport is a unique opportunity to make transport a driver of climate action, poverty reduction and sustainable development.

Its Implementation Plan aims to advance low-carbon, resilient and environmentally sound transport systems worldwide.
