There is a paralyzing number of distros to choose from, and there doesn't seem to be a way to determine if your PCs hardware will even work right with any given one.
Honestly I wish I could just get a cheap laptop with Linux pre-installed, but the ones I've found are remarkably expensive.

This is the answer right here. The symbols don't matter, only the physical position of the buttons.

QBJ3 in particular has forced me to drop the difficulty to Normal, after almost 20 years of Hard and Nightmare. The massive hordes of enemies combined with the tight spaces is just too much for me, and I have to wonder if it's really just me, or if the design philosophy has shifted.

I have similar feelings. A lot of maps these days have really high monster counts and huge battles with dozens of monsters at once. I don't think this is bad necessarily, but it doesn't feel like Quake to me. It feels more like Doom, but with tougher enemies and I personally find that exhausting.
