Did you attend @ESPO_PedENT - what was your highlight?

Obviously, my focus was airway & head & neck content but there were great rhinology & otology parallel sessions too.

🇨🇿 Let’s get more #AHP & #nursing reps at #ESPO2027 > Prague

Thanks for making it this far! Some final reflections

✅Great location
✅Great range of presentations
✅Innovative presentation types (e.g., debate & case based learning)

😔Navigating parallel sessions
😔Limited AHP & nursing rep
😔No interaction with poster authors

🧵20/
The image is of a large screen with a title page of ESPO and “closing ceremony” noted. A man is stood at the lecture and two men are sat at a table on the stage.

And the opportunity for an oral presentation (in that giant room 🫣) on behalf of my co-authors on the results of a global survey of paediatric practice with tracheostomy.

Further results also now published doi.org/10.1016/j.ijpo…

🧵19/
The image shows a large lecture hall with a large screen, lots of rows of chairs but no delegates. Some presenters are sat on the stage. An image of a presenter’s title slide about “children with a tracheostomy: global speech-language therapists’ practice”
The image includes logos from various institutions.

Finally, thank you to my co-authors for enabling two different research outputs to be presented this year at #espo2025

First, the chance to share our poster presentation on #feasibility #slpeeps #wespeechies #laryngeal #ultrasound #VFMI

📑 Post extubation stridor as predictor of clinical outcomes

📑 Perhaps one for reflection on differing clinical practices: use of fenestrated trache tubes & one-way speaking valves to support laryngeal rehab. No info on tracheal outcomes

🧵 17/
Image shows a poster highlighting the presence of stridor post extubation as a predictor of clinical outcomes following paediatric intensive care unit admission and intubation. Image shows a poster from a paediatric surgical team in Japan describing the use of one-way speaking valves and fenestrated tracheostomy tubes to facilitate airway functions such as voice and swallowing. Images include how the valve and tubes work together and include a chart of outcomes.

Navigating Adolescent Voice

Dr Hseu, Boston Children’s Hospital presented a comprehensive discussion on adolescent voice assessment & differential diagnoses

Important: voice issues are not just about laryngeal level issues!

Feeding tube dependency - 4

Dr Wilken discussed the treatment protocol in Essen, Germany.

And finally emphasised the need for change:
Plan to put in a feeding tube but don’t make a plan on how to wean it.

Definitely also resonates with discussions around thickener… 🤔

Feeding tube dependency - 3

Feeding is more than eating:

🤱🏼 Shared enjoyment

👶🏼 Supporting the infant

🫶🏼 Supporting mum

👣 Model enjoyment

-> change motivation for infant & mum 💛

Feeding tube dependency - 2

Dr Wilken described the impact of Traumatic Affect-Arousal State.

Again, resonating: need to return infant to state of relaxation.

I am reminded: all infants should be held during feeding, whatever method that is.
