Not gonna speak for Suzanne but for me positioning means to put hands in natural and doable poses. The hand can move in a multiple different manners but is still limited by flesh, tendons and skin as well as other bones. I try and break up the hand into components

I have not sure if it's hypermobility or double jointed in my thumbs, meaning the top parts bend backwards more than a normal person's and I didn't know it wasn't the norm for a while so my thumbs in drawings sometimes looked unnatural ヽ(；▽；)ノ
