Varasa's gentle encouragement makes me so happy! I want to share what I've written thus far but I also want to surprise Varasa when the chapter finally arrives. I'll just share a little scene from Narumi getting ready for the ceremony:

“Here, you can look now.” The person looking back at him had skin as white as snowcapped mountains and dark eyebrows that framed his face perfectly. His lips, painted a red almost as vivid as the color of his eyes, looked smaller but the makeup highlighted his cupid’s bow and the curve of his lower lip, making his mouth seem plush and voluptuous. He wondered if Sōshirō would want to take a bite. There was some blush applied to the apple of his cheeks and the white powder also covered the underside of his chin and the length of his neck. He pictured the alpha fitting his teeth to mark him and ending up with a white mouth, as if he had been eating too many sweets with wasabon sugar. Gen had to stifle a hysterical giggle at the ridiculous image. Between the striking makeup and the elaborate hairstyle, he was already looking the part of a young samurai bride. “Narumi-sama, please stand over here so we can finish dressing you.” They carefully fixed the wataboshi over his head, hiding his hair. Surrounded by the white fabric of the kimono hood, his eyes seemed larger. He concentrated for a second and a chorus of gasp surrounded him. “You really are osakabehime, Narumi-sama!” “What an enchanting shade of pink can your eyes turn into, Gen-kun,” Tsumiki complimented. “With the wataboshi framing your face, it looks even more eerie.”

apothecary hsnr au — an au of the au! While I’m pretty set in the way Hoshina will meet Narumi, I couldn’t help but play with the idea of having them in an arranged marriage (yes, just like in plum blossoms. I may be biased towards this trope).

“Have you lost your mind?! You can’t send her there!” “Gen-sama! That is no way to talk to your father!” “Peace, Hasegawa. I understand where my oldest is coming from,” serious green eyes, so similar to his own, bore into him. “What do you suggest we do? The emperor needs a hostage in order to keep us in line, nevermind how many times we try to express to him that we mean no harm.” “Shinomiya-sama, still, to call it a hostage situation…” Gen waved off Hasegawa’s weak admonitions with his hand. “Of course it will be painted as an amenable match for all parties involved, after all a Shinomiya could very well be the next empress. Doesn’t change the fact that Kikoru is not even 10 yet, old man.” “As I said, I’m all ears, Gen.” He clicked his tongue and started pacing around his father’s tearoom. It was clear to him why the emperor would prefer his sister over him, even though he was closer in age. Isao had legitimized him the moment he had found him but that didn’t erase the fact that his blood wasn’t as pure as Kikoru’s. Lady Hikari had come from an ancient line with ties to the emperor’s own family; it was an easy choice to make when it came to deciding the bloodline the future emperor should bear. But maybe they could excuse this if the arrangement didn’t involve the emperor, instead… Gen turned on his heel and kneeled in front of his father. He clenched his hands into fits on top of his thighs so the tremors currently wracking them wouldn’t be noticeable. “Offer me to the crown prince. As an omega I’ll be able to give him heirs but my blood is not without fault and so you can’t hail me as an empress even if you tried to usurp the emperor through his younger brother. That ought to bring the emperor some peace of mind.” Hasegawa’s mouth fell open. The head of the Shinomiya clan remained impassive, not even a twitch in his face altering his expression. “Are you being serious, Gen?” “Would I joke about the one thing I’ve screamed about not wanting?” “There are several things you like to scream about, son.” He felt his usual retort on the tip of his tongue but he bit it down and bowed instead. He heard the soft fluttering of robes; probably Hasegawa balking at the uncharacteristic show of respect. “Please, father. Keep Kikoru by your side until she’s old enough you can’t keep refuting offers and send me instead. By proclaiming me as your true son since I was a kid, you have shown that you favor me in some way. The emperor will be reassured he has taken something valuable from you.” The ensuing silence was a heavy weight upon Gen’s shoulders. Marriage was one of the topics that easily elicited fights between his father and I, fights that had only grown in frequency the older he got. The truth was; he didn’t want to ever get married. He despised the idea, he had hated the mere possibility of being someone’s property when he still lived at the brothel and that sentiment had not changed just because as the son of a prominent family he would be sold not to a client but to a husband instead. But this was his little sister. He would not let Kikoru fall into that trap if he could buy her a few more years of childhood with his own freedom. “Very well. I will ask for an audience with the emperor.” Gen deflated, the rigid angle of his squared shoulders melting into a slope. He raised his head again. “Thank you, father.” “No, Gen.” Shinomiya Isao gave him a small nod and the omega felt his eyebrows jump so high they probably just got lost under his bangs. “Thank you for your devotion to this family.” Out of nowhere, his throat constricted and he felt his chin tremble. Gen clenched his jaw, refusing to burst into tears over something so small. “I need to learn about poisons, medicine in general. Ah, maybe I should be trained under a midwife as well, any child I have will be less important than the emperor’s, right? So I should hoard as much information as I can.” Hasegawa let out a deep sigh. “I thought you meant tutors regarding your manners and your knowledge of current affairs.” “Ugh, those two. But the ones I mentioned are the true life or death ones.” His father cleared his throat. “Gen is right. He will be targeted if he’s to live in the inner court. We have trained you in arts that will help you defend yourself from an overt attack but the invisible and insidious ones… those you need to learn how to protect yourself against.”

But how could you actually ingest so much without noticing?” Ren’s eyes met his and then moved towards the table where Hasegawa was sitting. Sōshirō felt a shiver go down through his spine. “Did you know some people lose the ability to taste savory foods, Hoshina-sama?” He felt a small frown lodging itself in between his eyebrows at the apparent non-sequitor. “Usually, those people tend to favor sweet meals and even if you were to, say, try to prank them by adding excessive salt into their dishes or drinks they would be unable to notice the change in taste.” “Ren-san…?” “Are we serving a sweet wine today, I wonder?” He looked again. Hasegawa had not changed his expression since drinking the new jug but there were several pieces of rock salt missing from the table where the drinks were being served. Shit! “Hoshina-sama,” before he could stand up, a hand grabbed his sleeve. Sōshirō suppressed the reflex to slap it away and found himself looking at serious but very calm green eyes. Like the still waters of a lake during springtime. “Make sure they make him drink as much tea and water as possible. You need to flush his system so the salt doesn’t overwhelm his organs.” “Are you actually—?” The hand released him. “Would I be telling you all this if I was behind this poor assassination attempt? I do encourage Hoshina-sama to do a better screening of the service and the guests for future events.” “You do realize everyone will be interrogated as soon as I talk to the guards.” “You should try to send someone to the kitchens first, so no one can try to run for it. Servants are always more observant than the people in attendance and they will notice if something is amiss. If your culprit is among them then they will escape the moment they see you talking to the guards.” It was his turn to look at Ren with suspicion. “How do you know so much about this kind of thing?” The courtesan gave him a cheeky smile. Sōshirō could see his little fangs which were almost worryingly sharp for an omega. “As I said, you see many odd things when you grow up at a brothel.”

I’m afraid I don’t share the same status as most men in attendance, you would have a more fruitful evening sitting somewhere else.” For the first time since they started talking, the courtesan’s smile changed the shape of his face, rounding up his cheeks. “You misunderstand, sir. I’m currently here as a favor to the mistress, even if you wanted to enjoy more than my conversation and my go skills you would go back home empty handed,” he huffed a little laugh through his nose. “And probably with a black eye.” Without his permission, a loud cackle escaped him. Green eyes seemed to glint at his break in composure and they shined like polished jade under the light of the lanterns. “That’s a fair warning,” Sōshirō moved one of the black pieces on the board. “I should count myself lucky: I, unlike my colleagues, will leave this place perfectly content with my evening.” “Oh? So you’ll leave in high spirits even when I thoroughly defeat you?” “Ah, Ren-san seems really confident in his ability to win this match.” “Every match.”

“Lift your skirt.” “Huh?” “Narumi-san, you heard me.” He clicked his tongue but followed his order. With two hands he bunched up both the apron and the dress and moved it out of the way. Sōshirō kneeled again and saw the way Narumi chest stuttered in a strangled gasp. “Higher.” When they first got together, Sōshirō erroneously thought that the only way Narumi would ever cave to his instincts was if he had to force them into it. It wasn’t something that uncommon in the military, where people thought the only way to make others follow you was through brute force. While heavily regulated, dominance play was encouraged in both alphas and omegas although any exercises with mixed participants were only done under supervision. It wasn’t the way he liked to excise his own urges but as he was just starting to get to know the real Narumi Gen, Sōshirō had been pretty much open to anything. But he had been wrong. What Narumi craved was… Large hands gripped the skirts tighter and lifted them to the man’s mid-thigh. Sōshirō let the curve of his mouth turn softer. He rubbed his forehead against one clothed leg and made sure to look up at the already blushing face of his boyfriend. “Good. You’re doing so well, Narumi-san.” A short-lived whine fell in between them. “I– I’m barely doing anything, idiot.” “It’s okay. I said I would help, didn’t I?” “Right.” “So you just have to follow my instructions and let me do the work, okay?” A small nod. “Okay.” With just the pads of his fingers he followed the shape of Narumi’s hips, going upwards until he found the elastic of the pantyhose. He crooked his first knuckle until he safely took hold of only the nylon and not also the material of Narumi’s underwear. He couldn’t actually see what he was working with as his boyfriend hadn’t lifted his clothes completely out of the way but Sōshirō didn’t mind. He had no trouble taking his time. Once his hold felt secure enough, he searched for Narumi’s eyes again. The omega was barely blinking, apparently absorbed with Sōshirō’s expressions while he navigated the unfamiliar outfit. Sōshirō suppressed a shiver. To have Narumi Gen’s attention all to himself— surely, there was nothing quite as intoxicating as this. Slowly, careful not to rip them, Sōshirō lowered the pantyhose until he reached Narumi’s knees. Then he grabbed the back of one with his hand, while the other stayed grasping the fabric of the thighs. He shifted, raising one leg so only one of his knees was touching the ground. “Here. Lift your leg and rest your foot on my thigh.” Narumi made a squeaky noise at the back of his throat but did as instructed. Sōshirō kept tugging the fabric down until he was able to uncover his boyfriend’s foot, then tapped the leg he was still holding and the omega pivoted his weight to his bare foot now resting against the floorboards and lifted his opposite leg so Sōshirō could do the same thing again. But once both legs were naked under him, he didn’t have anything else to distract himself with and couldn’t keep his questions in. “Narumi-san… did you—?” The omega rushed to explain: “I was wearing tights, do you know how uncomfortable it is to have leg hair while wearing those? It feels so itchy.” “Of course.” “Your expression is telling me you don’t believe me.” He gave him a noncommittal hum. Before his boyfriend could come up with more excuses, he lowered his knee to the ground and crawled until he was nudged in between Narumi’s legs. “Hoshina?” “Don’t drop the skirts just yet.” “Wha—?” He grabbed the back of his thighs and stood up, lifting the taller man with him. Narumi squealed, hugging his waist with his legs in pure reflex. Sōshirō cackled and readjusted his boyfriend in his grasp. “You can let go now, sweetheart.” “What the fuck.” He hid a giggle against Narumi’s neck and felt strong arms holding onto his shoulders. “Come on, off to bed with you.”

aaaa i hope i'm not bothering you but this reminded me of a rut scene i'm writing! it happens after hoshina and narumi fight a kaiju and hoshina goes into a sort of overprotective rut and narumi has to find a place for them to be alone so hoshina's instincts can calm down (it happens in chapter 4!)
