This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone
they weren't lying, it's a good damn book. if i had to use words to describe it, I'd say it's thoroughly embroiled in a love for writing, and that love transfers 1-to-1 to the characters love for each other. incredible experience.

The Big Time by Fritz Leiber
dont have a lot to say about this one. solidly paced and written, as an old sci-fi it's free of some really painful writing choices that have built up over the years, but it also has some that had to have been old and tired even in 1958

User Unfriendly by Vivian Vande Velde.
i picked this up hoping for a fun little 90s isekai, but it was a really unbaked mess. numerous characters poorly introduced, the protagonist's primary trait is he doesn't know what's going on and that didn't change, 90% of the plot was in the last 20 pages.

Is Love the Answer? by Uta Isaki
very cute and sweet. the manga said relationships are individual, and then it presented actual individualized relationship dynamics. i once heard "love isnt real we have unique relationships to all the people in our lives" and i thought this embodied that wonderfully

Rogue Protocol and Exit Strategy by Martha Wells.
read these in a burst. speaking of sci-fi that wants to tell a good story, murderbot has done it again. fast, engaging, this is my current favorite sci-fi series The only reason I haven't read all of it yet is cuz I'm afraid to run out of them
