EPR is welcome legislation to push the costs of waste management back onto the industries responsible. If it can give consumers goods where a lower impact means a lower price tag, that's a win for all of us.
smallworldconsult.bsky.social
📺 If you buy a new appliance, larger stores must offer to take your old one away for free, saving you a trip to the local tip. If you do go to the tip, unlike other waste, the cost of WEEE treatment and recycling is paid by electronics producers through a compliance scheme, not your council tax.
smallworldconsult.bsky.social
📱 Electronic waste has had EPR since 2013, when the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations (fondly known as WEEE) came into force. You now see in-store collection points, where you can ditch your old phone, laptop or iPod (remember those?).
smallworldconsult.bsky.social
🌱 Any packaging with less environmental impact or cheaper to recycle will pay lower fees. Lower fees mean lower prices. So shoppers get offered a product with lower environmental impact at a lower price - going against the idea of a ‘green premium’ for more sustainable products.
smallworldconsult.bsky.social
🚦 Individual producers will pay higher or lower fees when ‘fee modulation’ takes effect in 2026. This will apply a traffic-light system to packaging based on how easy it is to recycle. Red packaging pays more, green packaging pays less.
smallworldconsult.bsky.social
💰 But low-impact packaging could become a competitive advantage, benefitting the environment AND consumers.
smallworldconsult.bsky.social
🧃 The Grocer reports that initially the costs for food and beverage packing will be passed to consumers: lnkd.in/egtDzr2J
smallworldconsult.bsky.social
♻️ Fees are based on the full end-of-life cost, so it pays for the industry to make packaging that's lower in volume, easier to dismantle, and cheaper to reuse and recycle.
smallworldconsult.bsky.social
🗑️ EPR takes a social cost that we all pay at a product’s end-of-life, and puts it into an economic cost at the start of its life. Packaging producers now pay to manage their waste, rather than taxpayers.
smallworldconsult.bsky.social
Who pays the cost of packaing?

As of last week, larger company that import or supply packaging in the UK must now pay fees under Extended Producer Responsibility.

What is EPR and how what impact could it have?

🌾 The climate cost of agribusiness: why the sector faces growing legal risks.

Agriculture is responsible for up to a third of global greenhouse gas emissions – yet policy action has been disappointingly slow. Now, climate litigation is stepping in to fill the gap.

We're proud to be one of 48 organisations across health, food, farming and sustainability calling on the government to adopt this 10-point plan to reap the benefits of plant-rich diets.

Read the full 10 Point Plan here:
plantbasedhealthprofessionals.com/wp-content/u...

3/3
Ten point plan:
Leverage public procurement and catering to source and provide more plant-based foods, normalising plant-rich diets and catalysing growth in the market.
Encourage food supply companies to transition towards a higher proportion of sales of plant-based foods.
Bolster food security and economic growth through support for the horticulture sector to produce more fruit, vegetables, nuts, beans and pulses in the UK.
Support British farmers to increase production and provision of plant proteins for human consumption in the UK.
Make it easier and more affordable for people to access and eat healthy food.
Raise public understanding of the health and environmental benefits of healthy plant-rich foods and diets.
Improve labelling to raise public understanding of health, environmental and animal welfare impacts.
Improve training for health and food professionals in regard to healthy plant-rich foods.
Update, reform and apply the Eatwell Guide dietary guidelines.
Increase investment in and support for healthy, sustainable alternative proteins.

🦋 More room for nature, with 75% less land used, 75% less water used and 75% less greenhouse gases produced compared to animal agriculture.

✅ Public support, with 69% of respondents wanting the government to do more to help people eat fruit, vegetables and other plant-based foods.

Would more plants in our diets be a good thing for us as a nation?

It would give us:

🩺 Improved health and reduced burden on the NHS.

🥕 Stronger food security by growing more fruit and veg in the UK.

🚜 More jobs and a boost to farm profits from expanding horticulture.

Just 9% of children and 17% of adults meet the 'five a day' recommendation for fruit and vegetables. National Diet and Nutrition Survey, June 2025. Only 53% of vegetables and 16% of fruit are home grown. The right support from government could transform our horticulture sector... into a vibrant contributor to our rural economy and food security.
John Walgate, CEO, British Growers Association. 73% of peopel said health campaigns should provide more information about how to access, prepare and cook healthy foods easily and cheaply. Survey by the plan sponsors, May 2025.

Our team Away Days took us time-travelling, walking in our client's shoes, and sharing our superpowers.

We're sober about the future with climate, nature and society all facing possible tipping points. But hopeful about how we'll help others to adapt, evolve and thrive in a more sustainable world.
A group opf people sat on sofas around a central table which is covered in paper, pens and post-it notes, whilst one person writes on some paper. Five people on the top of a grassy hill looking down over a valley, the sun is shining but the sky is cloudy. One person is taking a photo on their phone. A group passing through a gate on a walking path, with high grass either side. Behind them is a dramatic skyline with clouds hanging over a hill. The climate doesn't care how many renewables we have - only how little fossil fuels we burn.

@mikebernerslee.bsky.social explains why making things more efficient increases the amount we use.
smallworldconsult.bsky.social
From 4,000+ corporates that submitted plans to CDP:
47% sticking to plans
16% pulling back
37% being more ambitious

What gets measured gets actioned.

But to show others they're in the climate majority (a proven way to increase action) companies need to tell their story.

The solution

✅ Hybridised LCAs give you specificity AND use spend-based modelling to capture the missing emissions, making them system-complete and comparable with purely spend-based emissions too.
