Immigration is by far the most important political issue of the century for the simple reason that it has the same origins and effects, the same scope of impact, and arouses the same passions with the same moral urgency as the issue of slavery did in 1850s America

If liberty and law are to be conserved, ICE and CBP must go the way of the slave catchers of the 1850 Compromise from which they draw their lineage, and “progressive” concerns about immigration must go the way of the American Colonization Society and the 1820 Compromise from which they draw theirs

I think we were looking at those, but we bought our last car during the pandemic, and it was nearly impossible to get your hands on a RAV4 in Chicago! (We ended up with a hybrid Honda CRV.)
smbrnsn.bsky.social
For some of our road trip days that would be an extra 2.5 hours and on an average day it would be a least an extra hour.

I mean, that’s completely idiosyncratic to my use case, but it was the deciding factor between a hybrid and electric last time we bought a car.

They could each be convicted of 10 felonies and still have fewer felony convictions than Donald Trump. 😉

If we had a second car it would be an EV. But we don’t need two, and I don’t trust finding charging stations, or want to take the charging done, on our cross-country road trips. Five minutes for gas is almost too much for a 5-hour leg, much less a 15-hour one (which we’ve definitely done).

The elimination of USAID is a moral atrocity and all involved made a choice to enable, and then lie about, ending the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world.
MAE SOT, Thailand (AP) - Mohammed Taher clutched the lifeless body of his 2-year-old son and wept. Ever since his family's food rations stopped arriving at their internment camp in Myanmar in April, the father had watched helplessly as his once-vibrant baby boy weakened, suffering from diarrhea and begging for food.
On May 21, exactly two weeks after Taher's little boy died, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio sat before Congress and declared: "No one has died" because of his government's decision to gut its foreign aid program. Rubio also insisted: "No children are dying on my watch."
That, Taher says, "is a lie."

I will not back down.

Trump is now calling for the arrest of elected representatives checking his power.

What else is left on the path to full-blown authoritarianism?

Way to call Trump’s bluff, Gov. Pritzker.

The president threatening to have Chicago’s mayor and Illinois’ governor arrested is serious and bad, not least since it’s because they’re following the law instead of helping Trump break it.

But his capacity is limited. He’s hoping the bluster is enough.

To be completely clear, this is why, when someone says “[Person] should be in jail!,” my first reaction is “What criminal statute did they violate?”

We’re not dealing with brilliant strategists cleverly laying traps, we’re dealing with impulsive whiners whose advantage is contempt for laws, norms, and morality.

They’re not pulling some elaborate trick, they’re just willing—even eager—to do things regular, principled people consider off limits.

There was a brief window where conservatives were happy that Leo replaced Francis because Leo wears more traditional Papal regalia and they thought that meant a return to more "traditional" conservatism, but LOL Francis was never 1% this directly engaged against schismatic American tradcaths.

Gonna be thinking about this lede for a minute.
(RNS) — Last month, the Rev. David Black stood in front of a Chicago-area U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility and spread his arms wide. Adorned in all black and wearing a clerical collar, the pastor looked up at a group of masked, heavily armed ICE agents on the roof and began to pray.

“I invited them to repentance,” Black, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), said in an interview. “I basically offered an altar call. I invited them to come and receive that salvation, and be part of the kingdom that is coming.”

But when Black began to lower his arms a few seconds later, the agents responded to his spiritual plea by firing pepper balls, or chemical agents that cause eye irritation and respiratory distress, video footage shows. One struck Black in the head, exploding into a puff of white pepper smoke and forcing him to his knees. Fellow demonstrators rushed to his aid, and as the pastor rubbed his face in pain, the agents continued to fire.

“We could hear them laughing,” Black said.

There was a way to write a strong argument on these issues without misleading the public. Inaccuracies in this editorial reflect poorly on the integrity of the Washington Post and make for a less persuasive argument. 15/15.
