The LA fires are a human tragedy. But Republican lawmakers don't seem to care about human beings, so let's re-frame it.

The GDP of the County of Los Angeles is larger than the GDP of all but ~20 countries.

It has a larger GDP than Sweden or Taiwan.

Helping it recover is incredibly important.
I suspect many folks don't really understand the scale of the County of Los Angeles.

It is geographically huge.
The population is enormous.
And the GDP of the county is larger than that of most states.
Los Angeles County is 4,751 square miles -- almost twice as large as Delaware.

It is home to more than 9.5M people. Larger than Virginia or Arizona; more than twice the population of Louisiana or Kentucky.

It has a larger GDP than Ohio or Georgia.

These fires are a truly national crisis.

Reading comments👇🏾 and 🙈! I am a scientist who came from nothing. No $ can buy grit, faith, resilience etc. grad school stipend was priceless- it was more than enough. Sorry but I believe character development and discipline will make more scientists than more resources. My apologies if I offend.
We don’t talk enough, or at all, about whether people can actually afford the pathway to becoming a scientist—or staying one. And let’s face it: having wealth makes it much easier, often paving the way for greater success than those without. #science #academia

Does Africa need a light source? At ~US$ 1 billion initial cost and US$100 million annual maintenance, can the continent do it or should there be other priorities? #chemsky

Using liquid metal, scientists have devised a new way to make electronics that assemble themselves, with prototypes including transistors and diodes. By @cqchoi.bsky.social for @ieeespectrum.bsky.social spectrum.ieee.org/self-assembly

This is nothing like the liquid metal Terminator, thankfully, but self-assembling electronics could radically transform how we make computer chips.

It could also be much cheaper than today's billion-dollar chip fabs with their expensive lithography machines. 🧪
