Dear new echo chamber 🫱🏾‍🫲🏽 I'm SM (Dr S.M. Rodriguez). I'm Asst Professor of Gender, Rights & Human Rights at LSE and I spin a lot of plates in my life as a parent, community organiser, and academic. I read an intro that I liked in this style, so I'll write a thread of 8 fav things I've done (1/9)
Photo of SM, a brown skinned androgynous Black person with short hair in a blue suit jacket with black shirt, in front of thick green shrubbery.

My new article addresses the claim that the rights of trans women 'clash' with the rights of cis women. I examine the coloniality of the concept of rights underpinning this idea, exploring the erotics of sacrificial feminism and zero-sum politics in general... 🧵 www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
Dispossessive rights: coloniality and trans-exclusion in zero-sum politics
The idea that rights are possessions that are given and lost is so ubiquitous within the dominant discourse that its metaphoricity is forgotten. This amnesia naturalises possessive individualism, a...

So many lessons learned by my early inspiration, Assata Shakur. I've been meditating on her words especially often lately, as I work her prison writings into a book chapter. Can't explain what she has meant for my organising and thinking...

Many did and wrote about the insightful and incredible experiences. Keep reading, the evidence abounds.

Really curious abt how other academics decide how many speaking & service engagements they accept per term. Does anyone have a strategy or do you just follow vibes? 🫣
(I have always followed my heart but I'm so low capacity rn that I know I have to balance inspo events and the need for a cut off)

A Trump order seeks to impose involuntary confinement on homeless and mentally ill Americans.

Trans people are already at a higher risk. But a nightmare scenario of mass confinement hangs over the order - the right defines trans people as inherently mentally ill.

Trump Just Took a Major Step Toward a Nightmare Scenario for Trans Americans Under the Guise of “Public Safety.” Don’t Be Fooled.

If you have been stopped, challenged or harassed when using a gendered space (such as toilets or changing rooms) since the UK's Supreme Court ruling on the Equality Act we need to hear from you.

“What does it mean for one’s citizenship to depend on the violence of deportation in order to have meaning? Can we imagine forms of citizenship that do not require violence in order to have meaning? What are ways that citizens can ethically participate in realizing this change?”

In her new book "Abolitionist Intimacies," Eithne Luibhéid talks about how queer, trans, & other marginalized migrants experience deportation. Read a Q&A with her on the blog today.

Cover of Abolitionist Intimacies: Queer and Trans Migrants Against the Deportation State by Eithne Luibheid. Features art by Karla Ross. The gradient background transitions from red-orange to golden-yellow. Surrounding the title text are illustrations of people in a wreath-like formation. The figures share edge-lines, which emphasizes their interconnectedness. At the top of the composition, two individuals hold broken chains above their heads. Small orange butterflies flutter among the people. At the bottom center of the composition, a monarch butterfly with a Black power fist in between its wings serves as a striking focal point.

Who on here will be in Chicago next weekend for #ASA2025? It's been about seven years since I was a regular attendee and I am a bit nervous I've become estranged from the US scene 🫣 (thankful for that in general, but if these meetings are as large as they were pre-COVID...😬)

📘 "This study builds on and critiques theories of doing, redoing, and undoing gender by demonstrating how nonbinary transitioning disrupts dominant models of gender accountability, recognition, and self-determination."

Oh, that'd fold brilliantly into the next set of questions I had, which focuses more centrally on queering gender accountability. Thank you for sharing that! In these data, reliable support and validation did not come up so much outside of those few who had built specifically enby friendship pods.

This one was genuinely my pleasure. Please do share any thoughts or questions when you get a chance to read.
