Not tried it yet. Many of the issues with Mate were ‘I'm doing things differently from how the core OS expects’, so I'm trying just going with default software for a bit to see how it is.

Interesting, especially about the cloud stuff making Windows worse.
I've recently given in and accepted Wayland (switching to ‘main’ Ubuntu rather than Mate), and so far it seems less painful than continuing to try to avoid it.

Modern equivalents are so insipid the makers don't even risk including a noun saying what the product is.

For #AdventOfCode Day 3 part 2, I extended part 1 with recursion. Which also involved switching from #Vim keystrokes to #Perl, but it's the same basic algorithm:
