Simple living in a log cabin along the Snake River, plus catch-&-release fly-fishing. Out West.
32° outside & winds have stopped. Dropping to 27° tonight with hi tomorrow forecast for upper 30s & snow. Fortunately, we didn't lose power, but a lot of folks along Snake River Basin from West to East sides of state, did. Had battened down the hatches, but still a few items blew. Now relaxing.

Sun is starting to set & stepped outside just in time to get a phone photo of Trumpeter Swans flying over. Temp forecast for a low of 14° tonight, 39° right now. Need to get the fire going.

With family &, most importantly, grandkids 😀 coming from the South & the wkend spent in Sun Valley, found a lot of folks sure hoping for snow soon. I know it's not going to last, but with a hi of 50°, no wind & blue skies along the Snake...it sure was pleasant outside today!

No skiing today. A bit sketchy with icy base. But, did watch the lighting of the trees and Santa's arrival to Sun Valley!

Backyard sunrise. Hearing a jetboat on the Snake. Typical winter, today would be a ski day over to Sun Valley or up to Targhee. Hi of 50° today. Maybe just a drive.

Walk along bank of the Snake River this afternoon. At 54°, with nothing falling from the sky, more like a Spring day than nearly halfway thru Dec!

Enjoying belated AM cup of coffee. New mug, early Christmas gift from son-in-law, fam & grandkids arriving soon! Just read Rep LaMalfa blaming wolf reintroduction for beef prices 🐂💩! Around ranchers daily. Like one big rancher told me, ain't animal wolves affecting cost, more like packing co wolves.

Nov 11 the auroa borealis was exceptional. We watched from front yard starting at 7PM & finally called it a night at 1AM. The colors never let up. Vivid!

My wife was in a more open area on way home this evening. Caught the sunset in its spectacular glory of color tonight. Photo is not "enhanced" in any way. That was, indeed, the coloration!

I see other posts of tonight's Idaho sunset. Phone photo from back deck doesn't do it justice. Literally went fiery red with salmon pink above. And the colors lasted an extended time. In a word: stunning.

Caught tail end of around 500 honking Canada Geese flying overhead to land in nearby winter wheat. Kinda' gray day out, dropping to freezing tonight. Winter alerts in neighboring WY, but not E ID side.

Neighbor called me at 7AM, as had a bull & cow moose in his field. Yest, on my walk, scared up a cow moose from day bed, in our meadow. She also has this yr's calf with her. Today, moose tracks all over the place. Musta' been moose party last night! Photo: most likely a cow moose, boot size 13.

Dec 7, 1941...84 yrs ago. 12 remaining Pearl Harbor survivors. Impt date for my family. 2 brothers immediately enlisted: Navy & Army Air Corps. Dad wouldn't turn 17 for another yr, then signed up. Navy Amphibious Forces. All 3 were in Pacific Theater. They're gone now, but the memories remain.

View from back deck. Yest, top photo & this AM below. I could actually mow again...in Dec! 40 yrs ago, 1st frost was last WK Aug & last mowing was early Oct. Past decade last mowing in Nov. Our Winter has shifted more to mid-Jan thru March.

Scene on WeatherNation this AM. Dammit Jackson Hole! Keep cameras on your WY stretch of the Snake! Lol!
December 6, 2025 at 2:47 PM
Down along the Snake. Saw 3 muledeer, fresh moose tracks & 2 Bald Eagles. Back home. Fire's going. Gray, drizzling, overcast & foggy outside. Gear's drying by fire, hot cup of potato soup &...no schedule to keep.

Looks like winter has finally decided to arrive! Had to make a run to town & done with that for the wkend. Now: home, relaxing & enjoying my coffee. Area mtns due to get feet of snow, inches along my stretch of the Snake. After coffee, headed down to the river & see what's been out & about.
December 5, 2025 at 5:13 PM
First snow of Winter finally arrived during the night. 18° this AM, headed to 34° for a hi today. More snow forecast starting tomorrow thru the wkend.
December 3, 2025 at 3:03 PM
Lows to teens this week with highs into 30s. Forecast snow tonight/tomorrow & again by wk's end. Stocked up on dry firewood in garage. Woodstove is blazing, home is warm. Prepped for Winter, Mother Nature...bring it!
December 2, 2025 at 5:09 AM
Low last night was 19° & it's warmed to 35° right now. Some ice patches along river's edge. Clear & sunny with a few midges flying. Didn't see any surface strikes by trout tho. Back home now, sitting in front of the fire.

Have family & most importantly, grandkids!, coming for Christmas. Planning adventures & texting back & forth this AM. Newsflash for AI-driven spell check: it most definitely is: Ski Resorts...not Ski "Results" 🤦🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️! Lol!

Uh oh...someone's getting the cold shoulder! 😬
November 30, 2025 at 2:04 AM
28° in shade headed to hi of 33° today. Just got back home after a walk down to the river. Relaxing on deck in the sun, when Chickadees started giving alarm calls & House Finches flew away in every direction, as a Sharp-shinned Hawk made a missed pass at the finches. Colder temps & snow forecast.
November 29, 2025 at 7:40 PM
Stepped outside to take quick phone photo of tonight's sunset. Could hear some Trumpeter Swans in flight. Just now checking photos & up hi center sky is a group of 4 blurry Trumpeters. Will use good camera & try to get some good Trumpeter photos. Weather change should start bringing more overhead.

Neighbor came over to do some "touch up" work on the place. Now, that he retired from farming, think he just likes driving & playing with his bulldozer, lol! Area forecast shows a low of 17° tonight. Here along river, always 5° cooler than predicted. Bit of snow forecast, too. About time!
