Jacques is that character who used to be a very nice person, and then got traumatised into a very mean one. Older him, despite still having the same altruistic beliefs, acts horribly to people around out of protectiveness

Jacques REALLY wanted to become a teacher in his younger years. Sadly, the fact that he's an ability wielder and his ability's nature closed that opportunity for him, but he still found a chance to fulfill it in some way

Jacques knows to play a violin!
Well, not as much now, but he learnt it throughout his whole childhood and teen years
The reason was his father's love for music and a belief that every educated person should play an instrument. Jacques had no musical talent, and hated that he wasn't good at it

His father (deceased) was a political figure, built his career on using his ability (same as Jacques') to aid his employers. Jacques never liked that a lot, and never tried to pursue that line of work
