At this point the possibility of free and fair elections in November 26 or 28 appears remote. The current regime will create a pretext, defer and the Supreme Court will support. US democracy is already suspended.

At this point, I think a united Canadian-EU-UK response is required. If we all rebuke ambassadors, threaten to close consulates, this just may concentrate minds and flip enough senators and Congress men to end this. Unchecked, he will pick us off one by one and US democracy is dead.

Trump has encouraged the protesters, warned the regime and promised help is on the way. If he has chickened out again, he is culpable for many of these lives. Executions were due to start yesterday, but is deferment, imprisonment and torture, or at best internal exile any better?

How close is Russia getting to having to close wells and stop pumping? If they don't have refining capacity and export routes, this point must surely come. It would leave them dependent on Chinese or American investment and expertise to re-tap and recover and take many years to fully recover.

How about the $160bn war budget signed off for next year. Is this at all credible or absurd claim to counter EU plans to provide loans against Russian sovereign wealth?

That figures, though I have not seen the leak attribution. However, experience suggests Trump's motivation is not benign and it still appears that Putin wields genuine leverage. Trump may significantly overrate his intelligence, but is not stupid and must know he is being played.

Great choice all round. Will probably arrive in sufficient numbers too late to make a real difference, but will provide a credible guarantee towards keeping the peace afterwards. Hopefully, construction on underground dispersal shelters is also considered.
