Player characters built with standard array are above average

There are still a lot of variance with 4d6 drop the lowest, you are just shifting the bell curve. If you are intentionally trying to manipulate the outcome, why not just have a list of numbers for players to pick from?

"Gosh I'd like a break from all this hard work! What to do for my break? I know! I'll do the most difficult kind of art!"

I don't like either random outcome. If you go totally random, then often you'll get characters with bad stats which makes them less effective in the game.

If you house rule and modify the dice rolls, it's still random you're just fishing for high rolls, which I think is lame.

The original is 3d6 (roll 3 six-sided dice and add them up), which you go stat by stat rolling.

This gives a very unpredictable character stat distribution and can make for weird characters.

Lots of people house rule the rolling often by rolling more dice and chosing the highest three.

When building a character you have to give them stats. You can either determine the stats randomly or not randomly.

You do them non-randomly by using an array of points that you assign to whatever states you want.

To do it randomly you roll dice. There's a lot of ways to roll the dice.

You know how stuff like Vanilla WoW not having quest markers or FF14 cross-job skills are mythologized and spoken about with reverence?

That's how people talk about playing low stat shitty D&D characters.

It's fun to think about nostalgically but IT SUCKED AND THATS WHY THE CHANGED IT
snazithus.bsky.social
People only want to roll for stats with house rules because it increases their chances of getting high stats at level one.

That shit is lame as hell to me.

Standard array or point buy gives everyone an even playing field and prevents feel-bads at the table.

It is a funny thought experiment to roll up an underpowered character who then dies, but the reality is that unless you are playing highly lethal editions of D&D with a DM who goes out of their way to kill you, you are likely going to be stuck playing an underpowered character.

HOT TAKE

Rolling for stats in D&D sucks shit

It isn't fun if you end up underpowered compared to the rest of the party. Most people have house rules (rerolls, roll X drop the lowest, etc) that exist to reduce variability, which defeats the point of rolling dice in the first place.
