Relatedly, I’ve already informed my (white, US-born) spouse that moving to India might be our best option when we’re old

I know multiple immigrant families who’ve decided to move older family members back to their home country (after they’ve lived here for decades) because senior care/assisted living is often much better and cheaper outside the US.

I’m at a @moreneighbors.org fundraiser that’s organized as a fun Mpls vs St. Paul comedy roast. It’s fun because the Mpls folks roast St Paul, and the St Paul people… also roast St Paul.

This is also why other networked goods (transportation, sewer & water lines) tend to be managed as public utilities. Hard for companies to profit when people don’t value having additional connections, but need one reliable connection that goes to their house, regardless of how far from the hub.

The use-value of a technology and the stock market valuation of companies that sell/package that tech aren’t the same thing imho. People may find talking to each other across distances very useful, and companies may still struggle to profit off that impulse. Often the case with networked goods!

There were some pretty clear use cases of network comms early on that were benefited by further infrastructure, rather than what we’re seeing now (tons of investment in infra that didn’t come out of how people were already seeking to use tech).

I’m not fully sure the analogy holds in this case (though your provocation is interesting and made me consider if it does). The internet had several precedents that were user-innovated, like switchboard operators sendings msgs to each other, & BBS systems built on telephone lines.

We threw a "our house is 100 years old" party last night and made a cake-and-gingerbread model of it.

(Great british bakeoff voice) This is their most ambitious bake to date
Front view of a 9 inch wide bungalow style house with an ivory fondant facade, chocolate windows, and a gingerbread roof Side view of chocolate solar panels and a cute little dormer window sticking out of the roof. The cake board is landscaped with green sugar and small sugar flowers along the front of the house, and gingerbread steps lead up to the blue fondant front door Construction of the cake: spreading buttercream frosting over a square chocolate cake with extra sloped roof triangles in the front and back Gingerbread roof parts with piped royal icing decoration, lying flat on cookie sheets awaiting assembly
