As a PhD I was warned off an area because a senior researcher 'had plans' - that didn't actually eventuate for 10+ years. It was a wasted opportunity for collaboration.

Others I knew were so boxed in by 'long toes' they were effectively ejected from academia.

Everyone loses with this behaviour.
