Balancing Act

Gravity may be inevitable, but this remnant of a stone wall reminds me that there is power in a clear understanding of purpose.

I love these spiny little things.
They look like firecrackers to me.

Reflection of a winter sky.
Looking up while looking down.

Another take on the historic Paul's Bridge.
Thousands of cars pass over this solid, utilitarian structure oblivious to its stately construction, which only hikers, pressing through underbrush at the bank of the river, can appreciate.

Here's one final image from our New Year's getaway. We're back "home" home now. It was a lovely break, but home is pretty nice, too.

I suppose the stream this quaint footbridge spans was frozen today, but whether or not the bridge is currently necessary did not diminish its appeal.

Wolf Moon
The first full moon of 2026 was also a so-called supermoon.
I stood in the cold afternoon waiting for it to climb above the shelter on the dock.
It was a beautiful sight to behold, but my fingers and toes were sure glad to get back inside a warm house.

This post salutes the unique individuals I know who shun the ordinary and stand out brightly from the pool of sameness. 🫡
Thank you for bravely making the world more colorful.

On New Year's Day we awoke to a fresh new world. A clean layer of white has covered the drab gray ice.
That ice is still there under the fresh snow, however, as the unwary quickly discover. I took a swift, short ride down a slope without benefit of a sled. No harm done and, mercifully, no audience 😂

A bonfire on the beach to observe New Year’s Eve is an annual community tradition in our small coastal Maine village. We were sure glad for the fire’s warmth tonight! Fireworks later shared the clear night sky with a nearly full moon.

A murky day, all day, beginning with sleet and only improving to a cold rain.

The crack of dawn.
The break of day.

16 crisp degrees F. The snow squeaks when you walk on it.

My neighborhood was transformed overnight

The vapor issuing from this vent on a cold morning got me to reflecting on how quickly the last days of this year are slipping away.

Holy Night

The little angel figurine atop the crèche in our church’s sanctuary has suffered some knocks over the years but, undaunted, she’s still proclaiming good news of great joy.

Warm love to all my friends tonight, and Merry Christmas to those within that circle who hold this night as sacred.

It was kind of pleasant to walk through flurries this morning but we got no accumulation.
The sun made a laudable effort, but ultimately the clouds prevailed.

Cookie production has shifted into high gear.
I’m not the baker.
I’m the Appreciator (and sometimes the Quality Assurance Officer 😋).

The longest night.

Earlier today I notico the shadow of a candle.
I thought to myself
"That's kind of confounding, isn't it?"

Tomorrow, imperceptibly, days start to get longer.

Cold Feet

Today was a day only a duck could love.
I took this photo last week, when it was bitterly cold, but it seemed appropriate to share it today.
