When you start to analyze something as philosophy l, here's a good method for prep-work:

1) When are they writing
2) Who are they responding to? (Influenced by?)
3) What is the goal of this particular writing?

4) Analyze the ideas and arguments in a vacuum

5) Reintroduce the biographical & repeat
