So, that's where we are at.

The end. For now.

Here is a pic of a sled dog puppy to lighten the mood…

Trump has said: "We'll worry about Greenland in about two months ... let's talk about Greenland in 20 days."

That gives Europe 20 short days to come together. Denmark and Greenland can’t do anything alone if Trump decides to annex.

Are we so dependent on the US that we will just watch in silence?

The Arctic Ocean is also shared by Canada and Norway – so if Trump is serious about blocking the Russians from the Arctic, why would he stop with Greenland?

Svalbard or Ellesmere Island could very well be next. Let’s get Greenland right, so we don’t end there.

Much of Russia’s shadow fleet and military subs sail through the Arctic and we aren’t good enough at patrolling it. Fair.

China has shown great interest in the minerals in Greenland too and offered to invest heavily in infrastructure across the island. But the Danish government has blocked that.

That takes us to the NSS stating that the Western Hemisphere must be controlled by the US militarily, economically and politically – the Trump Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine.

The US wants to get rid of ‘hostile foreign incursions’ (Russia and China) in the hemisphere, incl. in the Arctic Ocean.

Like Venezuela, like Ukraine, like Canada – we cannot ignore just how much the Trump administration view geopolitics through a lens of natural resource access

Greenland is thought to have the world’s largest untapped oil and gas resources and more than 30 minerals used for batteries, tech, defence

Just before Christmas, Trump appointed Louisiana governor Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland.

Landry himself said he was honoured to take on the role "to make Greenland part of the US".

What does Louisiana and Greenland have in common? Oil, gas and critical minerals

The US could quite easily increase their own military presence without threatening to annex Greenland, and DK is increasing investment in its military as Trump told us to.

So, is this really still about defence?

Partly, but it is also about minerals and dominating the Western Hemisphere.
January 5, 2026 at 4:04 PM
Yes, DK has undeniably been underinvesting in its Arctic military presence, as well as the rest of its military.

But in 2025, DK has invested heavily in defence, including DKK27.4bn in Arctic defence.

Once the money is actually spent, it will take us to at least 3% of GDP (up from 1.4% in 2022)

Given the 1951 treaty, the US has all option to agree with Denmark to open new bases, increase personnel, or station more equipment in Greenland.

So, when the PMs of DK and Greenland say they are open to dialogue, they are. But so far, Trump has not engaged seriously in that option.
January 5, 2026 at 4:02 PM
The US has had 17 military bases and installations over the years and more than 10K people stationed in Greenland. But over the years, they have either closed them down or handed them over to Denmark and Greenland. Today, the US only has the Pituffik Space Base with around 200 people stationed.
January 5, 2026 at 4:01 PM
From 1941 to 1951 the US was allowed to set up military bases without asking for permission.

In 1951, DK and US signed the Greenland Treaty. Art. 2 states that the US is to help build and run defence areas on Greenland. Art. 5 gives US forces free access everywhere in Greenland - sea, air and land

In a statement, the PMs of Greenland and Denmark said:

“We have said it clearly before. We will say it again now. National borders and state sovereignty is protected under international law. They are fundamental principles. You cannot annex another country.“

But can we still be sure about that?
