Here's an excellent piece on the numbers behind the poor start to Liverpool's title defence. bsky.app/profile/mich...
What's happening to the champions?

I've taken a look at some of the patterns that explain Liverpool's start to 2025-26.

It's a long read on long passes, pressing, possession, set-plays, away form and more - and it's free at the link below. #LFC

Excellent work, but I feel wary to suggest anything else now.

Great to see, just a shame the midday kick offs are forcing a lot of kids to choose between playing and watching.

I was behind the goal for three today. I hate that it happened but not enough to want VAR. I hope it motivates the side for the games coming up.

For the Swiss model, this kind of table makes a lot more sense than the regular league format at this stage.

If you look at it from the perspective that you just need a winning record at the end - it’s just a race to 4 wins (5 if you want top 8) - it’s easier to see what teams need to do.

Makes Chelsea v Barcelona very interesting. If Chelsea don’t win that they’ll need to win away at Napoli or Atalanta to go through

A cynic might say all leagues have always just been money making schemes. I do wonder if US fans are more comfortable with the new format

It’s a foolproof system

Going on what happened in last seasons CL and EL it looks like all you really need to go through is a winning record, a term familiar to fans of US sports. Basically it's a race to four wins.
Three wins can get you through, but, jeopardy.

It's tricky. For me, at this stage of the competition, the teams in the third part of the table 17-24 are the ones to watch. They need to somehow find 4 wins (3 wins = jeopardy) and they probably only have 1 so far. Marseille v Atalanta looks like the pick for the neutrals tonight for that.

Jim Henson was right handed, but almost all muppets are left handed.

This is a thing.

Long balls are less effective at Brighton. If you kick the ball too high it gets nicked by a seagull
