I sometimes think about tech & capitalism as a distributed computation engine, focused right now especially on how to catch and hold human (and manipulate) human attention. Telling someone they're special in a way that only the manipulator can recognize is a classic way to accomplish just that.

As for Hades 2, I do see why many are displeased with the writing, but it has everything I want in a story:
- scary women being mean to me
- fat hairy men as thirst traps
- plot hinges on jarring deflationary bullshit
- a guy who will NOT stop seeking to put his dick in crazy
- musical numbers

That's kind of exactly the mindset that *I* developed after a decade and change of me seeing my primary defining feature being that I was Bad and Mess Everything Up Always. Why would being careless with my friends feeling be any different from being careless with schoolwork? That's Just How I Am.

Whether or not that angle was intended, it does work really well with Zagreus's arc. For example, hurting some of his closest friends by just not really thinking about how his actions affect them (because he's never thought that his actions matter at all!) felt so so real to me.

It's extremely rare for a story to take "you will die if you try to leave your parents' house, so whether or not doing that would be Good For You is actually kinda irrelevant" as a foregone conclusion and then goes about building happiness and fulfillment within that framework.
