Okay, I had a spare 500GB drive. Put that in an external USB enclosure and installed POP OS on it.
It worked a treat. A few niggles here and there, but no real frustrations so far.
Currently playing American Truck Simulator and it's fine.
I'll be trying more intense games later.

It was still a headache, but fuck it, I did it.
