I just did a study on this topic, asking people with underrepresented identities to recall the first time they saw those identities represented onscreen. Lots of "don't laugh" moments like yours.

If you'll be at the International Communication Association conference in Denver next week, swing by the first annual ICA Neurodivergent Scholars Gathering on Saturday June 14, 6-7:30pm in Agate B+C Regency 3. We will have food, drink, rude but honest pens, and COMMUNICATION BADGES!
Photograph of colorful pens reading HOW ABOUT NO, LEAVE ME ALONE, and THAT IDEA IS GARBAGE, plus 3 clip-on badges, one in green reading GO, LET'S TALK, one in yellow reading SLOW, DO I KNOW YOU?, and one in red reading STOP, WORKING/OBSERVING

Please share widely: UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media and the International Communication Association are co-sponsoring the first-ever Neurodivergent Scholars Gathering at ICA in Denver! This place has everything: food, drink, communication badges, awkwardly candid novelty pens...

Hakeem Jefferson does great measurement work. I assigned 2 of his papers for my survey research seminar. One presents a new scale of respectability politics (relevant to his post below). I strongly recommend his work for showing students how to reason through the development and testing of measures

I think a lot abt how marginalized people are expected to be perfect just to be treated w/ basic dignity, just to access legal protection. But democracy can’t mean rights for the respectable few. It has to mean fair and just treatment even for those seen as least deserving. That’s the real test.

Facts. You can't practice reciprocity with people who think reciprocity is for suckers.

I use "narrative" broadly; propaganda is one type of narrative (and a powerful one)

Please spread the word! I'm hosting the first-ever gathering for neurodivergent scholars at this year's International Communication Association conference in Denver. Be there or be square!

"What this country needs most, more than laws and political programs, is a few courageous, tireless, devoted leaders in whom the people can put their faith"

This looks like a question from the old Adorno F scale

I have a lovely abacus pendant that I bought from Middle Earth in Ann Arbor. It's made of silver and brass and it really works. Surely you can use that for data analysis?

While universities like Harvard and Yale might get hit by the NIH's change to spending, universities in red states could get crushed. Republicans are taking it up with Trump and RFK Jr., but don't expect them to talk about Elon Musk.

Red states have a lot to lose from NIH funding cuts. Their leaders are worried
Universities and research institutions rely on federal dollars from the NIH. But don’t expect Republicans to cross Elon Musk
