Postschizotherium intermedium, a large Pliohyracids with a hippo-like head. For almost a hundred year, people can only learn about this animal through its skulls and teeth. With no any thing about the postcranial, it's very hard to accurately reconstruct the entire body shape. 1/

Forgot to announce I have a new paper out this week! Animals that are more front-heavy have thicker, differently shaped forelimb bones to deal with the extra load. Limb bones alone may thus be useful proxies for body shape - but posture complicates things. royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/...

steller’s sea cow (Hydrodamalis giganteus)

I recently read Beasts of the Sea by Iida Turpeinen that recounts in dramatic fashion the voyage of Steller, the discovery, subsequent extinction, and the discovery of the skeleton of one and how it ended up In Helsinki. A wonderful book you should read.

#fossilfriday Brontothere skulls from the Eocene of the White River Badlands on display at the @alfpaleo.bsky.social museum in Claremont, CA. One of these (suspect it's the middle one) was collected by a teenage Malcolm McKenna before his career in vert paleo took off!
A skull of a brontothere mammal. It looks a bit like a rhino skull, with a long, low and robust skull and has two bony bosses over the nose. A skull of a brontothere mammal. And there are a large number of animals from different ecological niche coexisted here in the Longdan locality during the Early Pleistocene. Eventually, the most of the fauna disappeared with violent climate change event.
Here's a chart of the Landscape reconstruction. 6/

Combining all known informations and previous work achievements, we can see the palaeoenvironmental at the northwestern corner of the Tibetan Plateau during the Early Pleistocene is more likely a moist, mosaic of environments (including massifs, grasslands, woodlands). 5/

Although there are still more evidence is needed for verification and support, we believed that Postschizotherium is a semi-aquatic (or hydrophilic, at least) clade of Hyracoidea. This is very different from their living relatives, which is better at climbing on land. 4/

which is the first nearly complete cranium of this genus. The cranium has cylindrical orbits, protruding strongly laterally, with an elevation that surpasses the frontal surfaces. Protrude eyes are very common in semi-aquatic animals, such as the Hippopotamus 3/

Recently, a newly discovered pliohyracid cranium (which been refered to Postschizotherium cf. intermedium) indicated something more about this enigmatic clade of Giant Hyrax. The Cranium was found from Longdan locality, Gansu, China. 2/
