LUNGS He doesn’t want to scare his stranger. Hedoesn't want to make the panic worse. So he makes no sudden moves, merely tilts his head upon his crossed arms to keep the man in the most optimal view. Tynan knows that he frightens people. He knows that people look at him and they blanch, that they hurriedly walk in the other direction. He knows that they cross the street to avoid him. He knows that he’s too big, too tall, that his muscles are too intimidating, that his voice is too rough. He knows that he has scores of scars and tattoos, many of which are visible even when he’s wearing a full get-up. And he knows that his eyes are the cold kind of blue that his mother says means he doesn’t have a soul, and he even knows that he doesn’t smile enough—and when he does it’s never in the right way, either. heartsick But for the most part, he doesn’t really feel like anything’s happening. He does find an apartment that he likes, though. Derek scrolls through the pictures over a dozen times, chin on his hand and the evening sunlight stretching far through the windows. The apartment is in the modern farmhouse style for the most part, excluding the home office which is minimalist modern. The kitchen has concrete counters, which he’s never seen in person before. He wonders what that’d look like in reality, instead of through a phone screen. It’s a rental, but it’s newly remodeled and in a good area, and it’s not very far from his new work. Plus, it’s not like Derek can afford to buy an apartment, either. He would like to one day buy a place. But he hums and he haws and he makes inquisitive noises when Lane pauses, and Lane keeps talking, and Derek keeps listening. Lane’s voice is soothing, and it’s not long until Derek’s eyelids are drooping, until the only little bit of awareness he still has is centered entirely on Lane. “I think you’re falling asleep on me,” says Lane, but it sounds distant, faint. “Should I be offended?” There’s a pause—Derek doesn’t know how long. heartsick Gulping, Derek licks his lips. Lane’s pupils shift, catching the movement. The flutter in Derek’s belly only gets worse. “Movie?” he asks, faint and almost whispering. Lane takes a moment to react, then meets Derek’s gaze with his own and smiles. He says, “Sure.” And Derek pretends that Lane’s voice isn’t rougher, deeper, too. That he can’t almost see his own desire mirrored in Lane’s beautiful face. “The journey was okay?” asks Derek a couple of hours later, once the action flick they watched is over and they’re just sitting on the couch, close enough a braver man would call it ‘cuddling’. Derek prefers to not bare his heart quite so easily on his sleeve, though, and so he doesn’t call it what it is. heartsick There’s a part of him that wants that. That wants to linger in the misery. In the lost normalicy. There’s a part of him that wants to sit on the couch, turn the TV on and watch his favorite movie. He wants to order take up and cuddle under a soft blanket. But he steels his spine and he walks out the door with two suitcases and a duffel bag, and he gets into the elevator and he doesn’t look back. Grip clenched tight on the handles of his bags, Derek ignores the stinging in his eyes. This is fine, he thinks. This is good. This is is how it needs to be. The hotel is nice, at least. Derek swung for a bigger room, and he spreads himsel out on the couch and turns on the TV. dark fantasy my beloved
Your Result: Dark fantasy Dark fantasy is fantasy that edges toward horror. Fantasy horror can be considered a type of dark fantasy, but fantasy stories that put too much focus on the fantasy to be considered horror are often what people think of when it comes to dark fantasy. This is fantasy that can include dark themes, violence, death, gore, and all kinds of shocking content. You’re not someone who shies away from the dark parts of life. You understand that denial can end up making things worse and hurting people more. You would rather look darkness in the face than play pretend. You would rather embrace darkness and grief as a part of life than to take life only by half. The good intermixes with the bad, and you want the whole messy reality of it all. Fiction and fantasy can be wonderful ways of exploring and understanding those dark parts of life. Dark fantasy exists not because the people who write or read it are bad, but because they want to explore all of human reality, even in settings far beyond the human. As long as you approach the world and others with care and understanding, it’s good to embrace the dark as well as the light. Some people could learn to be understanding of darkness and live less in denial, but not you. Some people could learn from you. Just don’t dismiss the light and joyful things as less meaningful or impactful, because it all comes together in one messy whole.

He could feel Captain’s squint even through his hat, such power did it hold. So Jos held the hat tighter to his face. It smelled like feet and rotten food. quote from my WIP 'desiccated empire': The ship had been sailing through the air for almost two weeks now, crossing over the Topsy Mountains (named for the tipsytopsy peaks) and the Verdant Sea (named for the verdant color) and even the Sainted Meadow of Ireé (named for Saint Ireé, who was supposedly beheaded there by a mad emperor). Jos had spent every second of that journey trying to project “I’m too busy to talk” at the Captain. This didn’t really work, because mostly he had nothing to do.
