What's happening in Chicago is not normal.

The arrest of Alderperson Fuentes is just the latest example of how far Noem and Bovino are willing to go to ignore the rule of law. We must all speak up.

We're just a few weeks (!) out from this year's National Research Conference for the Prevention of Firearm-Related Harms - I cannot wait to see so many colleagues/friends in AZ as we bring our research field together to collectively advance critical solutions for gun violence prevention --

Another Monday following a weekend of deadly and devastating shootings in this country. But the thing giving me hope are the many many people working so hard every single day across sectors and disciplines to prevent this violence. Grateful for every person in this work and in this fight.

What feels like forever ago, I made a starter pack of gun violence prevention activists. Today felt like a good day to dust it off again.

Lots of folks out there doing really powerful work to keep all of us safe from guns.

“We are currently governed by a leader indifferent to scientific consensus if it contradicts his political or economic interests, hostile to immigrants and intent on crippling the research universities that embody our collective hope for the future. The menace now is within.”

One of the many things I’m doing today is sending postcards to my lawmakers about how critical the CDC Injury Center is to the health of our nation. It must be protected & funded. You can support this effort by calling, emailing, posting.

Endlessly proud of our research field and of our Society especially (also - registration for our annual conference is open)! I can’t wait to see so many friends/colleagues from across the nation in AZ this November:

RFK Jr. went on Fox News today to claim that HHS has had “no successes” in the past 40 years.

I beg to differ.

Wednesday's Weather Rating: 10/10

I am at a loss for words. For the first time ever, five straight days with a perfect rating. And it's just like the rest - sunny with high temperatures in the upper 70s, low dew points and a breeze. The vibes are STILL immaculate!!

Things that continue to be true in the year of our lord 2025: COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective, more guns do not make us safer, Trump is in the Epstein files.

Firearms are the single leading cause of death among children and teens in the U.S.

Full. Stop.

Our consensus study was released today! So very grateful to have been a part of this and with some of the very best people🩷 (And...here's to a world and future for our kids where these drills are no longer needed).

Grateful to the many people who contributed to this massive effort (including and especially the phenomenal staff at NASEM) who made this work possible. /end

Among many things, this report offers best practices and a research agenda to support emergency preparedness while protecting the mental, emotional, and behavioral health of our children. /3

(Quick thread) -- over the past 18 months or so, I've had the chance to be a part of the NASEM committee studying the impacts of active shooter drills and related school security measures on student health and well-being; working with some of the best people in the entire world. /1

Thanks to one of my best friends and colleagues for articulating (far better than I could) how deeply challenging and heartbreaking and hard this has been --

The Columbia deal is incredibly disappointing. For those of us here--faculty and students--trying every day to do good work, it's a huge blow. But "the discourse" is also demoralizing for two reasons: it assumes the choice was simple and it seems to blame all at Columbia. 1/6

A small piece of good news in #publichealth today: in addition to malaria vaccines for kids age 5 month+, we now have malaria TREATMENT for babies!

(Of course, we also have to pay for the treatment & make it accessible. But I will take any joy I can find.)

First malaria treatment for newborn babies approved for use
Malaria caused 597,000 deaths worldwide in 2023, with children under 5 accounting for 76 percent of all malaria deaths in the World Health Organization’s Africa region.
