They probably don’t have the OS expertise in house given the note about the the CPU vendor support. I’ve been in this position in the past with vendor supplier drivers in Linux. However I was able to make things work for my customers while we rebuilt our stack. We had expertise to do it though.

They may be blaming the “kernel” when in truth their whole OS is likely out of date and they don’t want to spend the resources to fix what they see as minor support issues when they have a new product coming out with a whole new updated stack.

Also as someone who used to ship commercial appliances at volume with lots of drives, worrying about failure at startup vs while in use is pointless as proven by the statistics of mass quantities of commercial grade drives we replaced, all of which ran 24/7/365.

Most drives now days spin down when not in use for power management. In effect a power transition.

There goes any chance to ever own Grand National at anywhere near a reasonable price. Not that they were really hobbyist affordable before. 🫤

Just bought two. Seems very appropriate to add one to my Starlink mini travel backpack.

I’ve more than once thought a bird that flew into one of my windows was “done”. Even seen some stumbling around with a wing out. It just took them an hour or so to recover from the concussion and return to flight. I usually leave out a plate of water nearby when it happens.

While Shure sounds a lot better than Apple, for *most* people it’s probably not significant. But Apple’s ear bud feature set is far superior to Shure’s and those features do matter to many people once they discover and get used to them.

Shure for example makes 2, 3, and 4-way (driver) ear buds with the 4-way costing upwards of kilobuck ($1k). You can even get custom fit ear molds for them (extra cost). The ear equivalent of custom orthotics.

Apple didn’t create the market. High end, expensive headphones and ear buds have always existed much like high end stereo speakers.

I have and still own more than my share of headphones and ear buds that cost more than my pair of AirPods Pro 2. And I’m far from alone in this.

There is no more abundance of NOTHING as is experienced driving I-70 across Kansas or I-80 across Nebraska. Is there large swaths of nothing elsewhere, yes, but Kansas will always win any competition of a pure absolute count of nothing, emptiness, and children crying “are we there yet?”

At a previous job we used to have “Airwolf Friday” celebrations, rocking out the end of the week. I had a nice stereo setup in my cube complete with a large sub. Rocked that wing of the building for a few minutes.

This only works if there’s a funk band ensemble. I mean what good is Marky Mark without a Funky Bunch?

The PDF format supports DRM, so not so big a jump to the scum part, per se.
