In cases like that of Windows where corporate pressure permeates to the operating system level, Linux distributions are a very suitable alternative.

Whatever you call it, it's ridiculous and unnecessary. FOSS computing is where it's at: most software *currently* has free, open source equivalents without unnecessary features, paywalls, and data collection shoved in.

dehumanizing: degrading
I am aware this was intended as a joke, however: I find dehumanizing objects disturbing, as doing the same to living beings is a closely related practice. As well, destroying usable hardware creates environmentally problematic e-waste.
