Slide two: London Metal exchange must act now on ‘dirty copper’ One of the world’s largest copper and gold mines, the Grasberg Mine in West Papua, Indonesia, is discarding vast amounts of mining waste (known as tailings) into rivers in and around the New Guinea rainforest. Polluting the local area and water streams in this way would qualify as a serious environmental crime if it were to occur in the UK, this means that copper produced at the mine could amount to “criminal property” under the Proceeds of Crime Act, irrespective of whether the production process is lawful in Indonesia. GLAN and the London Mining Network have alerted the London Metal Exchange (LME) and their regulator, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to the risk of trading metal products using copper produced at the Grasberg Mine. "For over 50 years, the Grasberg mine has extracted copper from the mountains of West Papua to the detriment of the lands and livelihoods of the people of West Papua. It is estimated that the mine dumps more than 200,000 tonnes of toxic tailings waste every day directly into the river Ajkwa. For the indigenous people living and farming nearby and for a hundred kilometres along the river and out to sea, the mine has caused untold destruction, bringing pollution, conflict and corruption into their everyday lives.
