Here’s hoping 2026 is another great year to be a freelance cartographer!

Now I’m based in Vancouver, I hope to create all sorts of maps of Canada, and to work with some awesome Canadian clients.

If you, or someone you know, needs a map, get in touch!

I’ll continue to love making maps of NZ too!

Freelance cartography is still a side-hustle, so all of this was just evenings and weekends fitting around a full-time job (until August) or full-time exploring Canada (since August).

I’m very proud of every map I’ve produced. This year’s totals are very much on par with 2023 and 2024.

I have one or two regular clients. New clients get in contact either because they’ve seen my maps in print and have Googled my logo/name, or because another cartographer has referred them.

Or, because NZ is tiny and everyone knows each other, they already know me and know that I make maps…

129 hrs is an estimate of how long it’d take me to create each map *if I recreate them right now*, knowing exactly how I’d do everything.

It doesn’t include trial-&-error time, or going off on tangents to discover things that may be useful for future projects.

The true total is far far higher.

Nice to see a map of New Zealand!
Based on the label position, “Baie de Taranaki Sud” (South Taranaki Bight) should actually be “Baie de Taranaki Nord” (North Taranaki Bight).

Do you have it as a shapefile as well as an svg? If so you can bring it in using the BlenderGIS plugin. Not sure that would help with the mesh of pain though, as it would still just be a ring of vertices that Blender then tries to make faces from.

What are you doing with it once in Blender?
