i'm like if a wikipedia was transsexual

she/her, it/its if we're friends
tonight's watch: uzak (2002) dir. nuri bilge ceylan

a film that is sadly less than the sum of its parts, or at least it was for me

we have masterful acting from our two leads, which rightfully won them awards at cannes (sadly one of which was posthumous)

beautiful isolating cinematography

oooh, this is cool

first time i've ever seen a chinese scholar write on the french wars of religion

tonight's watch: a six hour epic from 1913!!

fantômas dir. louis feuillade

my thoughts on this are similar in a lot of ways to my thoughts on les vampires (1915), also by louis feuillade

this is the worse of the two films though,

in addition to being a masterpiece, this happens to be the first bangladeshi film i've seen

so let's add that for the count

tonight's watch, a real masterpiece

a river called titus (1973) dir. ritwik ghatak

a powerful exploration of a dying community, of female solidarity, of the modernising and bourgeois forces trying to kill the community off

i also own this book that i have not got to yet in my progression through my library... but its like 400+ pages so there's going to be a shit tonne of useful stuff in here

as my first moroccan film, this knocks off another country from my 'world of cinema' project
November 16, 2025 at 12:06 AM
tonight's watch: trances (1981) dir. ahmed el maanouni

i have only watched one musical in my life, and have never seen a concert film before, so this was a very interesting experience

and its an interesting concert film to start with as the film is almost entirely devoid of structure
November 15, 2025 at 11:21 PM
tonight's watch: barry lyndon

i was really looking forward to this film, anticipating it to rank highly in my opinion

i was disappointed by what i got, a beautiful package, with stunning lensing and composition, wrapped around a story that did not compel,

this represents another country knocked off my 'world of cinema' project

we're starting to get some fill out in west africa, let's gooo (darker colour to indicate the one just input)
November 8, 2025 at 10:29 PM
tonight's watch: the acclaimed mauritanian film 'waiting for happiness' by abderrahmane sissako

almost entirely devoid of a plot, we are left to consider themes of identity, community, tradition and emigration, in addition to having much to think about, the film is also pretty and well shot
November 8, 2025 at 10:20 PM
back baking today, and i produced a nice batch of 16 carta di musica flatbreads :)

these always taste great
November 8, 2025 at 5:06 PM
tonight's watch: glass onion

some strong character work, some good emotional payout, but ultimately its walking the same path knives out did, and the 'mystery' such as it is, is not compelling

very interesting use of covid though, rarely see a film where it plays such an important role

you know, when your edit adds 1000 characters to an article, an edit description of 'fixed spelling mistake' is not overly believable

as a single user, he's not going to break through the rfc consensus here, particularly in an article with this many active arbitration remedies on it

the way the last attempt to do what jimmy wants (the march rfc) was shut down was pretty definitive
November 3, 2025 at 2:35 PM
tonight's watch: the love of jeanne ney (1927)

damn, first genuine dud i've watched in a while, a real shame cos the direction is great but the story its attached to is so fucking bad lmao

the trouble with the films i watch is, they're all too good

i kind of forget what the average film is like
and my rating distribution ends up looking like this
October 30, 2025 at 7:20 PM

last night's watch (i wanted to review it last night, but it was almost 04:00 by the time the movie finished, i was very sleepy

les vampires (1915)

i hated this film, for the last 3 of its 8 hours i was begging for it to be over
yet, i will rate it 9/10
