in the 60s my Dad was a drama lecturer and he used to order French classic plays (Molière, Marivaux etc) direct from Paris. they came completely unbound - even the paper covers were more like endpapers. and uncut as you say. he took great pleasure in cutting them with his pen knife. i had a go once.
