I think the conversation just needs to be started, and a review can be a great jumping off point. It shows people have seen it and care enough to review it.
The review is part of the legwork of the community engagement. They've put something out there. The other people are just sitting on it.

Is that a problem of people putting stuff online, or is it just a problem that people don't necessarily start conversations about film and books anymore. I feel like the reviews at least give a chance for others to see and start a conversation. Because otherwise, people just aren't talking about it.

It could be the perfect springboard for conversation. "Oh, why did you feel that way?"
"What did you mean by that?"
It's like, perfect to start a conversation.

Sometimes the reviews are for them. Wanting to keep a log of what they've watched, what they felt at the time, that kind of thing.
Or they just wanna talk into the void. You get that, bro. You love the void.
