a lot of people remembered it solely because of the mod for generations that ported in only the daytime act 1 levels. so it's interesting to see, like, people rediscovering why the game got kind of middling reception back in the day

I can see something similar happening with sonic world adventure. it was inaccessible for a super long time until the backwards compatible xbox version and then the PC decomp, plus it was widely seen as the last breath of the sonic "soul era" before colors ushered in the "meta era"

there was a period of time where chaotix was held up as a hidden gem in the sonic series primarily because it looked and sounded awesome and nobody could play it because the 32X was difficult to emulate. then once 32X emulation became more widely available everyone realized the game was kind of bad

i would love to see how the age demographics shake out on this. if it's kids who were 13-16 years old in 2020 who are now 18-21 years old it would make so much sense to me. literally anything nintendo does is awesome when you're 13 we just had the benefit of hindsight telling us the wii U sucked
