Although TP clearly loved Tolkien (though no uncritically), there are few fundamental similarities in what they're each trying to do, so I wouldn't expect that to mean you couldn't get into TP.

I think Mark has answered your question, so a follow-up. The traditional response (for which I apologise in advance) when someone says they "started on Pratchett" is to ask, what did you start with?
