I'm sure it was close, but I actually think the campaign hurt him. Mescal and Buckley are so clearly on the same level, but the campaign presented them as Jessie Buckley! (and also Paul).

Loved Mescal - I think it was a mistake to run him in supporting because it gave the perception it was the lesser lead performance. He would have had an easier time in best actor (where he belonged.)

There can't possibly be a reason that the character and/or the movie HAVE to be called Ella McCay. Even if you can't rename the character, you could the movie literally anything else. "Running Up That Hill," starring Emma Mackey... anything!
