Do you remember those atmospheric 80s children’s fantasy movies with the puppet creatures that got weirdly dark and made you say “wait is this even for kids?” and were never critically acclaimed or very successful in theatres but later would become cult classics? 👀

Polite Society (2023)—very cool coming of age film. A lot of familiar elements, fun twists, levelled up with killer fight scenes 👍 👍

I’m having fun building a YA romance book list for February.

This one is a personal favourite!

In this YA thriller runaway teens escape to Edinburgh in hopes of reuniting with their fugitive parents but not before experiencing the pain of waiting all day for your flight to board at the Calgary Airport 🛫 #relatable

I adored this little book of comics that see the world from a child’s point of view. It definitely reminded me of old comic strips like Peanuts and Calvin and Hobbes. I think kids and adults will be charmed. Definitely something to read together if you’re introducing your kid to comics!

Author @sraughley.bsky.social’s new YA book The Queen’s Spade is inspired by real historical figure Sara Forbes Bonetta. Very cool!

I feel like most of my problems would be solved if I could just spend a rainy night reading in the library from The Adventures of Tintin (2011).

I’m fascinated by how big Canada is and how little we actually know about each other and how differently we live our lives. This graphic memoir offers so much insight into a life in the north (the actual north).

Writing humour is so hard. This graphic novel really nails it. I laughed the whole time. Brilliant stuff from Kelly Collier and @kidscanpress.bsky.social.
