It’s still pitch black on the coast of Oregon … and it’s 648 am. I need a cup of coffee and a flashlight before the dog can go out

I’m 0-for-1 at whale watching! Oregon totally owes me a whale

I’m at a seafood place in bay city, Oregon and the proprietors have never heard of the concept of a poke bowl. I love America

I’m trying to find words to describe the incompetence of a news organization that spikes its own story domestically and allows it to run in that country’s nearest neighbor without interruption. It’s a staggering level of ineptitude.

Brain dead.

Today I conducted an interview and immediately turned it around into a 1200-word article, which at one point was my stock-in-trade but hasn’t been recently.

I took a couple weeks off Portland area hiking cause I’ve been busy with work (& also cause I’m an old man who hurt his back while moving a metal bed frame around) but today Pepper and I got back after it at the Powell Butte Nature Area.

I’m not really a tabloid fan but 5 years ago the Daily News ran this headline and I’ve never really stopped thinking about it

It’s 7 am in Portland and it’s still pitch black and I’m letting my sleeping dog lie but we’re gonna get a hike in before today’s NBA shift
December 21, 2025 at 2:58 PM
I work the 2-10 shift out here on the west coast and that means I start watching basketball in the early afternoon and then it takes me all the way through dinner and into bedtime, and then I wake up in the morning and have 5 hours to live before I do it again

I bought this dorky grumpy old men earflap cap when I lived in New Mexico but never really wore it, and now that I live in the constant wind and rain of the Pacific Northwest? Daily staple

MSG calling itself “the world’s most famous arena” just sounds thirsty. If it’s true, you don’t have to say it.

Sincerely: Is the claim actually that white men are facing systemic discrimination from white men? What are we doing here? It’s frustrating that really “smart” people succumb again and again to these racial propaganda campaigns. Anti-1619, anti-CRT, anti-woke, now rampant anti-white racism hysteria.

So systemic discrimination DOES exist! But white guys are the victims of it!

The most intellectually, politically, and culturally lazy cohort in modern history - white guys of mediocre intellect, creativity, & personality who can only ape the theories, language, laws, & struggle of Black people.
Guys, victimhood culture is alpha now

Me: “All that goes in the instant pot! Just one button.”

Trader Joe cashier: “I put that in the microwave. Also one button.”

I think this man just tried to trump me in culinary laziness.

Jobs in media are disappearing for the most simple reason: most of your fellow Americans don’t subscribe to a newspaper or magazine.

The best advice a young journalist can get: create something for yourself and your audience that doesn’t exist yet. The old paths to success are dead.

I moved to Sacramento with the best intentions and it didn’t work out and that’s life. Full speed ahead Portland 2026!!!

All the people who post about things they would listen to or read or watch on a desert island should maybe go outside more??

You’ll be doing a lot of hiking and palm frond weaving and fishing and crabbing and you’ll have no time for the collected works of AA Milne

If you’re an academic posting about how it sucks that football coaches make way more $$ than you, there’s a reason football stadiums are way more full than your lecture halls.
