I like movies. Sometimes I write about them for a site called MovieBabble. I’m on Bluesky because all the Nazi shit on Twitter. Fuck Donald Trump. (Insert Colorado flag emoji)

If anyone’s interested, my top 10 of 2024 piece is now up on MovieBabble. A little late, but there were a few films I felt I had to see before I made it!

In many ways, 2024 felt like the first year that the industry was mostly out of the effects of the pandemic.

You know what I was just thinking about? How much I liked MOLLI AND MAX IN THE FUTURE (2023). Zero budget, high concept sci-fi that has a bit of the HARRY MET SALLY vibe going for it. Easy to lose sight of tiny movies like that.

NOSFERATU is a glorious slice of gothic horror from one of the most exciting filmmakers currently working. There is some truly indelible imagery that feels instantly iconic, and will stick with me. It’s also a film that uses actors to deliver genuine scares. Lily Rose-Depp is incredible here.

I dusted off the ol’ Medium to write out my thoughts on the results of the 2024 Presidential election which I’ve spent the past 3 weeks stewing over. It’s pretty angry and messy, but if you’re interested in reading it, it’s right here:

I loved A REAL PAIN. An often hilarious and ultimately deeply moving film about the bonds that tie us to family members, even if it’s sometimes just by a thread and even when we have more differences than similarities. Kieran Culkin gives one of the best performances of the entire year.

My latest is in @thenation.com, writing about how Democrats scapegoating trans people is grasping at straws following the 2024 election, and certainly disheartening to see:
Trans People Shouldn't Be Scapegoated For Democrats' Failures
Politicians and pundits are stoking a backlash to trans rights in the wake of the election. They're playing a dangerous game.

Honestly fuck the Game Awards for nominating Balatro. Ever since they did it got me interested enough to play it and now I'm so addicted to it that it's impossible to do anything productive. This is all their fault for nominating a game so good

My timeline here on Bluesky versus whatever the fuck my timeline became on Twitter really goes to show how much Elon drove that place into the ground. It became a barrage of right-wing bullshit and OnlyFans promos.
This is so much better.

Got to cross a big one of the cinematic bucket list by seeing ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST on the big screen tonight. It remains a stone cold masterpiece that utilizes incredible characters, and a vivid sense of place to take the western genre to mythological heights. I wouldn’t change a frame.

GLADIATOR II is fine. Ridley Scott can’t help but craft solid action sequences (over the top here and bordering on schlock at points), but the script drags this film down with its hollow lead character (I ❤️ Paul Mescal so this hurts) and predictable story. I had fun but THE LAST DUEL this is not.
