I am wondering if it is more 50/50 for primary but specialized rapidly collapse into primary catabolism. Quicker than synthesis diverges.

In response to herbivory they can fight, evade or even over compensate. The later two are development as defense.

That is kind of my gut. How would you split Anabolism vs catabolism? And how does energy differ across CNSP? Or is that super lineage specific?

As in Barley with 20% cyanogen dry weight is just wack.

Thinking of the standard senntence saying “because plants are sessile they …”. Is the direction arrow correct? Or is sessile not a cause but a consequence?

I.e. because plants are autotrophic, they are sessile.

If you were the predicting sort, how much of a plants metabolism would be in the following four categories?

Primary Anabolism
Primary Catabolism
Specialized Anabolism
Specialized Catabolism

Feel free to define "how much" by gene #, enzyme #, flux fraction, etc.

And your own 1 v 2 defn.

At least it didn't autocorrect to sweetbreads.

We did some modelling using Arabidopsis population parameters and the typical enzyme gene will be fixed for stop codons in about 10,000 generations once it has 0 effect on fitness. Unsure how to model whole gene deletion events as we see whole gene deletions more then fixed stops.

Non-equlibrium systems, solid state, etc. Never seems to work. If they are set in that biologists are just stamp collecting doofuses then it is impossible to move them off that.

That is actually what physicists or engineers come back with and I've never been able to dissuade them. It is the expert-expert argument that I find hard.
spicybotrytis.bsky.social
Still won't make a dent. It is so hard to get past the "We largely solved how the Universe works, how can one individual be more complex than that?" counter argument.

Yep, the choice with apple trees is spray a lot of pesticide or always use a knife.
spicybotrytis.bsky.social
That is why every western movie shows a knife being used to cut the apple first. Not for Eastwood to be dramatic and slow but so he didn't eat a worm.

So would an accurate prediction be that only anthocyanins are missing from these lineages and proanthocyandins must still be a key component of the Caryophyllales metabolism? From the glucosinolate realm, if a gene has no function it is gone before a new species arises.

Given the number of posts of similar context across the years, accuracy and precision might be overlapping.

If one can’t be Linneaen specific on vegetables, when can one be?
spicybotrytis.bsky.social
Nerd needless precision alert; none of those are mustard. That would be Brassica nigra or Sinapus alba.

Already knew that from the way popgen types respond to the words epistasis and pleiotropy.

An interesting part of Brassica/Glucosinolate. There is so much myrosinase that the glucosinolates 1/2 life in herbivory is on the order of seconds. For any receptor signal to matter it has to cause significant effects in less time than seconds onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/.... #secmet

Exploring any avenue makes sense. Almost feels like a return to that old analytical chemists goal of finding and structurally characterizing all the metabolites in a single plant could be useful as well.

How to find the poorly co-expressed and non-clustered pathways is the next big step for plant #secmet studies. Most enzymes even Arabidopsis or other models have no known function:

Found the strigo paper, ours looks like a Sclerotinaceae set of perception events leading to TFs. Unsure if yeast will have these responses.

Repeating to link to the Secondary metabolism channel - Anyone have any literature on how yeast or other fungi detect plant phytohormones or other compounds? I am struggling with the search terms to find the genes that allow fungi to respond to plant compounds. #secmet #natprod
