My former cat used to do this and I would stand up and he would run excitedly out of my room towards the kitchen and I would close the door and enjoy some peace and quiet because he didn't meow at me when he couldn't see me. Worked every time.

A recent foster kitten attempted to jump across but failed to achieve any momentum and fell on her face. It was hilarious (for me).

I wonder how much of it is a need to feel justified in disliking someone, so in finding out that the person they dislike is a bad person they can retroactively feel justified, despite their initial reasoning being potentially completely arbitrary.

I use a mini easel to hold my cross stitch so that I don't end up with anything hurting from holding it
