Hello Bluesky, and fellow #shark nerds and #Ocean people. I stopped using Twitter years ago but @sharkcolin.bsky.social just inspired me to give social media a second chance. This time I’ll be much more selective about who I follow, agnostic about likes and follows, and much more casual about it …🤞🏼

Heading to your first scientific conference? The F&F Lab students have written a blog post of their experiences at their first conference, with their advice for the conference season. Lab staff have also written a piece showing how their experience differs. www.fishandfisheries.com/news-blog

We faced this in Australia - a science hostile government was elected and axed fisheries staff and disbanded consultative committee and advisory groups. Ten years on, the impacts of that shortsightedness remain, and the industry has suffered the most from it.

Just read a call for project proposals on sustainability, systematic change, coastal restoration etc. Projects should include stakeholder engagement and have measurable outcomes after one-year. One year. While well-intentioned, I don’t think these are realistic expectations for real conservation.

The world needs science for evidence based decision making. Science needs women and girls to broaden its perspectives and approaches that help drive innovation, application, and discovery.

For the nth time, scientists everywhere must understand that scientific * #evidence* is apolitical, but the *prioritization* of #science is *inherently* political (though it *used to* be non-partisan). #Politics is how free societies address #PublicHealth challenges & we *must* participate.

I ditched twitter years ago, it’s was just so negative. I’m finding bluesky much more positive - e.g. the posts appear in timeline order (no playing algorithm games) and there’s a thread for only the people you follow. Much nicer and cleaner.

The new 100 peso #banknote is out featuring the stunning #Palawan peacock pheasant. The new notes are plastic & waterproof and look awesome. The ‘butanding’ still graces the reverse side.

Palawan is a jewel of Filipino 🇵🇭 #biodiversity. looking forward to returning in July for workshops 🤩

We have a new #sharkscience paper just out on working with batoids, including ethical considerations and guidance regarding the difficult choices field researchers sometimes face. This was a global collaborative with many authors, and is published as #openaccess link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Well, this finally happened! After working on sharks for over 20 years, I finally saw my first #whaleshark in the wild! We were heading to a dive site and we came across this juvenile male just cruising. We motored ahead and jumped in, and big fella just came right on by. Simply gorgeous 🤩.

I used to gave a series of notebooks, colour coded and everything - and I could never find them or remember which notebook was for what project or train of thought 😂. They looked awesome though when I could find them all and stack them in a bookshelf 😳
