Looking for enrichment in my enclosure.

Yes, there are terrible people in collectivist communities/cultures who come to power, just as there are benevolent people in collectivist communities/cultures who come to power.

Yes, power will put as its #1 objective maintaining and amplifying itself.

But individualism is killing Americans.

From exploitative for-profit healthcare,

to staggering inequities in social systems/safety nets across the US,

to the wildly misunderstood notion of freedom of speech as freedom from consequences,

to the vast majority of the population not masking in public.

It's selfishness garnished as choice.

I realize I'm coming into an age where I'll find out that more and more of my friends have died.

But this seems like an awful lot of people, and suddenly, compared to what I expected.

Anyway, I mask in public, so

So now, the thing I always carry with me -- or almost always -- is my phone

Yes, I live with my spouse. But we sleep very different schedules, and if I needed help and couldn't get to him, I could set off the phone SOS

Just trading one mitigation strategy for another

I was stunned for a bunch of reasons, not the least of which was the fact that she was _always_ online. We hadn't talked much recently for various reasons, but I was stunned she didn't message someone

Over time and compensatory measures, I started to get used to having one or more off, for charging or other reasons. Sometimes I just took them off because they didn't feel good on at the moment

Then (cw: death) I found out a friend of mine died suddenly in her apartment, where she lived alone.

Thank you! It was the last of our bread, so I tried making french bread in our breadmaker for the first time. Not bad, but I think the recipe needs more water than it claims.

Also, we made a beef stew yesterday!

The holidays are as tough as they are great, highlighting feelings of isolation and loss.

Please don’t underscore it with comments like, ‘You won’t come see us/let us see you,’ or repeating, ‘Maybe someday you’ll visit again.’

They likely miss you too. Work with them to meet their caution level. 🫶🏻
