Disappointed safe speeds were not chosen to protect pedestrians and cyclists, but at least average travelling speeds on some of these roads has reduced with the new road layouts. Take care out there 🚲

Pockets of central Christchurch keep 50kph limits
A decision made three years ago to drop limits to 30kph has been overturned, while in another part of the city the limit will drop by 10kph to make it safer for people walking.

Great to see the connection along Antigua Street, alongside Parakiore, completed 🚲🎉🫶
Shared post from Christchurch City Council (original post on Facebook): The Antigua Street cycle connection, road and pipe upgrades are finished! With around 1100 cyclists travelling down Antigua Street each day, this is one of Christchurch's busiest cycle routes. The new connection features separated cycleways in both directions between Moorhouse Ave and St Asaph St and connects the Quarryman's Trail, Uni-Cycle as well as other central city lanes. This will make it nice and easy to get to Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre by bike or scooter when it opens later in the year. A key part of the project was also upgrading the watermain pipes which had reached the end of their serviceable life. The road has also been resurfaced, and the western footpath has been widened and renewed, with new gardens adding the finishing touches to the area. Great to see the improvements along the South Express MCR at Mandeville street! A new beg button has been installed on the west side and cycle light timing has been improved, significantly reducing waiting times for peds and cyclists! TY CCC for making cycling improvements!

Great to see the new shared path through South Hagley Park is open! So much smoother, flatter, and wider than the old one (between the netball courts and Deans Ave at the old Blenheim Road alignment/South Express Major Cycle Route
The bridge behind the netball courts, where the new path starts on the western side. Looking west towards Deans Ave. Looking west towards Deans Ave at the start of the new path. The new path is asphalt and at least 3 metres wide, sweeping around to the right (north of the old path). The old path has been dug out and re-levelled to presumably lay down grass. The intersection of the shared paths at the Deans Ave end, near the old Blenheim Road alignment and South Express Major Cycle Route. Looking east towards the netball courts and city centre. The new path is on the left. What remains of the old path (which has been dug out and re-levelled) is on the right.

That's it from the very first international #coffeeoutside ride in the world in 2025 (we are just inside the international date line, after all). We got amazing RSVP numbers (ahem! More than Adelaide, Berlin, and Paris even 🫨), but we fell short on turn out. The rain did us in.
