Like the far right hated Charlie and the far left basically considered him a joke, plus the choice of target completely aligns with their explicit stated desire to start a civil war whereas the motive for a left wing shooter would just be that they were mad. Not that the latter is impossible.

the demographic that supports israel's genocidal ambitions but doesn't like when they're executed on is probably pretty slim

much less structurally-required waste (advertising, insurance, etc.) too

I think there's a degree to which people are amazed by a computer that can talk in the same way a spider would be amazed by a robot that can spin a web.

It makes sense that humans would place outsize importance on talking because talking is the thing that we do.

I don't think statements that are openly acknowledged to be speculation can really be defamatory, it's not like they claimed to have some kind of secret evidence it was AI.

Every accusation against the CIA must be evaluated in a vacuum, with the CIA presumed innocent, and their long history of committing crimes and covering them up lends no additional weight to the idea of a coverup, which is regarded as conspiratorial nonsense up until it's conclusively proven

What's crazy to me is that the idea that America's intelligence agencies just stopped abusing their power at some indeterminate date (even though all the conditions that led to those abuses persist) is seen as the default, sensible position
August 27, 2025 at 4:53 PM
Not to say their legal powers aren't also absurd and excessive, of course
August 27, 2025 at 4:21 PM
"(legal)" is doing most of the heavy lifting here lol
August 27, 2025 at 4:20 PM
Also even if you forget all about the root causes, it's wild to blame anyone other than America for Crumbl cookies, which is extremely Mormon lmao

"food insecurity" being on there is wild

> reduce gender confirming surgery in children to almost zero

do they mean increase it to almost zero lol

I put a lot of weight on what he has to say because he worked on the evolution of biological intelligence before transitioning to machine learning, and is also just a brilliant scientist in general.

People who dislike AI due to (rightful, imo) cultural polarization against Silicon Valley, but fwiw I work with a lot of people in machine learning and a slim majority would probably say LLMs aren't intelligent. This is an expert who takes that opinion:

Of course not. The behavior of antisocial psychos is their own fault, but that behavior isn't in our control, whereas the vulnerability of the political system to organized bigotry is to a certain extent.

Ok then, take reconstruction (because 150 years of history make things significantly clearer). Huge, undeniable progress was made in ending slavery and codifying Black suffrage, but we can still clearly identify failures like the lack of land redistribution which threatened that progress.
August 14, 2025 at 3:04 PM
I could have been more precise-- the problem isn't the mere existence of bigoted and antisocial people, it's the political viability of organizing around that bigotry. The former I agree is inevitable but the latter is a very different thing.
August 14, 2025 at 12:23 AM
It would be stupid to say this means the progress was meaningless, but at the same time, most people agree that it had specific shortcomings which left room for political white supremacy to find purchase and undermined itself.

I don't agree fully with the person you're responding to but I think the general point is the fact that this "open, liberal society" produced these people who want to burn it down is indicative of a major, essential flaw in that society.

I can think of a stronger incentive than tax breaks but I don't think he'd like it

This used to bother me a lot but imo it's actually completely reasonable to not have a standard for proof positive of consciousness, and unreasonable to demand one as a precondition for saying something isn't consciousness.

did he fake this footage lol
