EXPLORE - This week's Rare Wonder is the Rufous #Hummingbird. At 3.5" tall the National Audubon Society calls them "pugnacious" defenders of their territory. They're still widespread, but are in decline.

Follow the migration journey of 1 Whooping Crane family - 37 days & 2.5K miles, crossing critical wetlands & grasslands along the way. They were once widespread, but in 1940 were down to 15 birds. Today, the number has climbed to some 540, thanks to conservation work.

EXPLORE Rare Wonders-The Whooping Crane, though well known, is still a rare bird. I didn't realize how rare they are. It looks like there are only about 800 in all of North America.

Just reposting this which I think is the most gorgeous thing I have seen in my career - a critically endangered orange-bellied parrot feeding on a carpet of daisies after an ecological burn. This was the first time they’d had the chance to feed naturally in 15y and was wonderful to witness

Meet the Orange-Bellied Parrot. They're one of the few parrots that migrate, traveling between Southern Australia and Tasmania. It's estimated that there are less than 50 of these little fellows in the wild.
