I am the news director at Spokane Public Radio and program director of KSFC, SPR's public affairs station at FM 91.9 in Spokane. Also a Washington State Cougar and Seattle Mariner fan.
Tomorrow marks the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald, the freighter made famous in Gordon Lightfoot's iconic song. Here's a great video from the Minnesota Historical Society about the ship, its demise and Lightfoot's role in memorializing it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=osAv...

News is public radio's most popular format. Therefore, KPBX becomes all-news with most of your favorite NPR and network programs, plus local news. KSFC becomes classical 24/7. KPBZ goes to all jazz, in anticipation that the all-jazz station, KEWU, moves to a different format.

Why? A year or so ago, before we heard of plans to defund public broadcasting, we did some study and determined that our audience numbers had been stagnant and that, if we didn't act, SPR's future wasn't very bright. (2/4)

I'm honored to share that I'll be serving for the next year as president of the board of Public Media Journalists Association. It's going to be an interesting year with all that's going on in public media land. This requires us to think a bit differently about how we serve listeners.
