From everything I know about the fandom, I suspect it has nothing to do with ageism and everything with ship warring. 😂

That's unfortunately been a thing on social media for years. 😔 But, like, it depends on the context. On a political post, I do see them as a statement, but otherwise, I don't think it's commonly associated with party sympathies
